I tried to vote with a two- and four-year old under tow this evening. It wasn’t pretty. I had to entice Delton to enter the polling place (the ambulance association at East Donegal Township’s municipal building) by showing him the basket of candy at the registration table. Then, we waited about five minutes in line, which was apparently enough time for both kids to climb up on a stool and grab a ruler from a pencil jar and pull on a string of lights decorating a bulletin board.

The cavernous ambulance bay amplified the kid’s voices, surely annoying everyone inside. I opted for the paper ballot, thinking it would be faster. All it got me was a shaky voting stand made more unstable by one child crawling underneath and another grabbing the top. In the end, my votes for school board were not accepted because one of the responses strayed outside the box. The poll worker said he could void that section or I could re-vote. Seeing as I was already about to strangle the kids, I chose to get the hell out of there. (I didn’t really know any of the school board candidates anyway, so perhaps this was God’s way of preventing me from making the wrong choices.)

Aleisha’s dad was waiting at the house when we got back. In spite of his earlier inattention, Delton somehow managed to pick up and pass on to Dale my earlier explanation about Donegal’s high school referendum. “We were voting to raise money for a new school, Pappy.” I see now that this did not pass, which is disappointing (it’s the second such referendum to levy taxes for some badly needed school construction) but not surprising. Wonder if the current school’s trailers will still be there in ten years when Delton starts?

A conversation this afternoon with Delton:

D:  “Mommy I love you!”

M:  “I love you too!”

D:  “Mommy, will you love me forever?”

M:  “Yes, Delton I will love you forever and ever and ever.”

D:  “Will you love me when you die?”

M;  “Yes, I will love you when I die”  (Very morbid at this point)

D:  “Mom, when I get older I’ll take my kids to see your grave – that will be fun”  (Lost it at that point)

M:  “I don’t think that will be fun.  Wouldn’t you be sad?”

D:  “Yes, but I still love you”

Out of the mouths of babes.

Well we have had a sick household this past week.  Delton came down with a fever, sore throat, runny nose and headache on Tuesday.  So, he is on his 3rd day of being home from school.  Julia woke up this morning with a fever – no other symptoms.  She is crazier than ever.

This is my second day home this week (had to cancel meetings twice) and Tim stayed home yesterday.  What a pain in the butt.  I wish we had family who lived close by to help us out on days like these.  I have to be so careful with my job because they implemented a new attendance policy last year.  We get 10 sick days a year, but they are now regulating them.  Why do they give them then?  No clue – enough complaining.

We are hoping the kids are going to be alright for trick or treating tomorrow night and a small Halloween party we are having Saturday with some friends.  This year the kids have decided to be the following:  Delton a knight and Julia a pumpking.  I stayed up until 2:30 am Sunday making their costumes so they could wear them to Dutch Wonderland Sunday night. Oh, what a mother does for her children.

We visited the Kids Corner Web site tonight while listening to the show. They are running their Candy Carnival where kids vote for their favorite and least favorite candies. Julia likes chocolate, but dislikes candy corn. Delton surprised me by saying his favorite is “chocolate cream eggs,” which I assume means my beloved Cadbury Creme Eggs. He dislikes jawbreakers, probably because he got a ton of them at a parade last year, and we wouldn’t let him eat any.

The Web site also has a form for submitting jokes to an online joke book. I asked Delton if he had any he wanted to share, and again, he surprised me by rattling off these two “scary” ones without skipping a beat (even correcting me when I worded it differently):

Why didn’t the skeleton go to the party?

Because he didn’t have any-BODY to go with!

Which ghost has the best hearing?

Why, the EAR-iest one, of course!

The other day, Julia mentioned that there are two Wyatts in her class. The one we know pretty well, because he is our Realtor’s son, and, well, the target of Julia’s biting on more than one occasion.

I wasn’t sure if I’d met the other Wyatt, so I said, “Julia, what does the other Wyatt look like?”

She thought for all of two seconds, then said, “He looks like a human.”

Delton:  “I wish I had four eyes.”

Mommy:  “Why?”

Delton:  “So, I could look at a book and watch TV at the same time.”

Everybody finds some loose change or bills in the laundry every now and then. I did not, however, expect to find this after emptying a load of Delton and Julia’s clothing from the washing machine:

For the past two days we have had bad storms in our area.  Well during nap time I forgot to turn Delton’s light off and shut his blind because I wanted to get downstairs to check the weather (have to watch those tornado warnings).  Well after his “nap” (he says he naps but we know he doesn’t).  He came out and said:  “Mommy, I think we had a black out while I was napping.”  He was talking about the lights flickering off for a second or two and then coming back on due to the storm.

While driving by a golf course Julia says:  “Momma look sand boxes!”  She was refering to the sand traps on the golf course.

I had many other laughs today, but these two stick out the most.  LOL 

Julia and Delton were playing (together! nicely!) with some toy animals in the living room while Aleisha and I finished our dinner tonight. After a few minutes, we hear Julia say in her adorable, little voice, “Animals dead. Animals dead.”

She walks into the dining room carrying a bucket of plastic animals. “Animals dead, Daddy.”

Then, she sets the bucket on the bathroom floor and closes the door. “Animals in heaven,” she said, calmly walking back into the living room to play.
